En este reporte de Chronicle y del portal Wwwwhat’s new? se exponen muchas opciones de recibir estudios gratuitos en muchos centros por via online. Primero se detallan 5 Universidades virtuales con muchos cursos en distintos ambitos, pero al final de la entrada reprodcimos una lista de centros que ofrecen esta posibilidad en la red.
En la era de la información es unaq buena noticia encontrar lugares de donde obteneraprendizajes sin costes o reducidos. Adems de los cursos gratuitos se ofrecen otros muchos en niveles de coste casi testimoniales. Para muchos puede ser la oportunidad de emprendr nuevos caminos. Creo que el 2012 será el año de la «educación virtual masiva», un hito en la historia de la educación al empezar a establecerse un vínculo entre entidades de enseñanza reconocidas mundialmente, con usuarios presentes en cualquier latitud (ved el ejemplo de la Universidad de Stanford).
Por supuesto, aún falta mucho para luchar con la actividad presencial en cuanto a alta calidad en la formación -quienes la tienen-, pero se nota que se está trabajando bastante en lograrlo.
Existen institutos ofreciendo cursos gratuitos en todo el mundo, como podéis ver en esta completa lista, así como portales especializados en ofrecer este tipo de contenido.
Como ejemplo, cortesía de Chronicle, tenemos como importantes exponentes a:
1. Do It Yourself Computer Science. Un interesante sitio que engloba varias de las Ciencias de la Computación ofreciendo algunas nociones en forma de contenido multimedia (audio, video, documentos, foros), debidamente divididas por lecciones, asequibles para todos sin costo y sin horario. El registro es tan sencillo que puede realizarse hasta con las credenciales de Twitter.
2. Udacity. Udacity nace como proyecto de la mano de Sebastian Thrun y David Evans, profesores de ciencias computacionales en Stanford que vieron el gran éxito del curso virtual de Inteligencia Artificial ofrecido con ayuda de la Universidad, y la posibilidad de aumentar la cobertura en un mejor espacio. Teoría de la computación, Sistemas operativos, Construyendo aplicaciones Web y Algoritmos y estructuras de datos, hacen parte de la oferta.
3. Coursera. También con cursos ofrecidos por profesores de Stanford pero junto a educadores de la Universidad de Michigan y la Universidad de California en Berkeley. La lista de cursos incluye Ingeniería Civil, Anatomía, Tecnología empresarial, Teoría de juegos, Modelos probabilísticos, Ingeniería de SaaS (Software como servicio), Aprendizaje de Máquinas y más.
4. GoodSemester. Jason Rappaport de la Universidad de Lehigh es su creador y quien lleva trabajándolo incluso desde antes de graduarse. Es una plataforma de aprendizaje que permite crear y unirse a cursos virtuales creados por el resto de los usuarios. En su página de Facebook son mostradas las herramientas que le suman cada día, empezando con sus apps para iPhone y Android que dicen tener listas muy pronto.
5. Udemy. Yale, Duke, Cambridgey y Northwestern son algunas de las Universidades de donde provienen los profesores de Udemy, aunque más interesante aún es que no son los únicos que dictan los cursos virtuales, cualquiera puede crearlos. Así pues, el catálogo abarca, entre otros: Desarrollo de aplicaciones para móviles, Música, Bases de datos, Gestión de Operaciones, Psicología, Emprendimiento, Historia y hasta SEO. Los enunciados son apenas los cursos gratuitos pues hay decenas más de pago (cuyo costo empieza en US$5).

Yale – 35 FREE Courses. Each course includes a full set of class lectures produced in high-quality video accompanied by such other course materials as syllabi, suggested readings, exams, and problem sets.
Khan Academy – Thousands of FREE Courses. A free world-class education for anyone anywhere. All of the site’s resources are available to anyone. It doesn’t matter if you are a student, teacher, home-schooler, principal, adult returning to the classroom after 20 years, or a friendly alien just trying to get a leg up in earthly biology. Notre Dame – 72 FREE Courses.
